Freedom of speech is one of the great founding principals of the United States. In fact, the First Amendment specifically prohibits limitations on speech by the Government, with very few exceptions. Rush Limbaugh is not one of those exceptions and he is forgetting the rule. Read the rest of this entry »

The recent uproar about women’s rights and health care is a time machine back to the 1950’s.
Birth control has been a non-controversial issue for decades. At least it was until Newt Gingrich, in early February, latched on to the fact that the Obama administration announced in mid-January that it had mandated that birth control be covered at no co-pay as basic health care service by insurance providers.
It took a while for the GOP to take hold of the issue and blow it out of proportion. Read the rest of this entry »

If the dead can’t vote in Chicago, should they be allowed to influence politics from the grave in Pittsburgh and Denver and New York?
The Koch brothers may be the most visible part of the Dead Billionaires club, but they are not the only New Deal-hating Libertarian elites funding the dismantling of the government of the United States from within.

In yet another stunning reversal, President Obama and many leaders in the Democratic Party have backed away from support of a true consumer champion.
In September it was Elizabeth Warren, then acting head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). This month it is Dr. Donald Berwick, acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). Read the rest of this entry »

We really have to thank Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas for last Thursday’s enlightening lesson in Supreme Court hypocrisy. Just hours after considering whether to take on the review of the Health Care Reform Act, the pair were the guests of honor at an annual dinner of the conservative Federalist Society where one of the sponsors is the law firm arguing against health care reform. Most of the more prominent guests at the conservative organization lean heavily against the Health Care law. Read the rest of this entry »

OPINION – Democrats stink at branding and messaging. They still live in the wonkish intellectual nirvana that somehow if we explain the societal benefits of policy to the American people, it will quell their fears and they will rise enlightened into a new age. Republicans embrace fear. They package and brand it in flavors and variations, like Oreos or spaghetti sauce. Fear sells their Sham-WOW politics. Back us and we can make America shiny and white again. Just follow us, folks. We’ll keep the bogeymen at bay. We’re the patriots. The morally correct. The true Americans. It is not dissimilar from the kind of advertising that the cigarette industry used to sell cancer to kids for generations. Read the rest of this entry »

If Gallup had existed in Colonial times, we would still be saluting the British flag. At any time of great consequence in our nation’s history, our leaders have led, not governed by opinion polls.
Republicans, in the post-Health Care Reform era, still keep pandering to the crowd.

“The American people have spoken.” That has been the mantra of John Boehner and the Republicans for weeks. Yes, the American people have spoken, Mr. Boehner, but I am one of them, and I can tell you it is not your voice, or your Neolithic point-of-view, that speaks for me, or a lot of other Americans.

President Obama’s stab at changing government is a lot like Heracles’ famed battle with the Hydra of Lerna, a nine-headed serpent with poisonous breath. Every time Mr. Obama proposes cutting off one head of a foe of change, two more grow back. The worst part is that many of the heads are found in his own government.
