Wide eyed and silent, a frightened looking George Zimmerman, arrested and charged for the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, was escorted into a Seminole County Courtroom for his first appearance. Finally, a little bit of proof that the system works for everyone, only a mere 45 days, dozens of protest rallies nationwide, and more than two million petition signatures later.
The system does work for nearly everyone; It just needs a little encouragement for some.
Now Zimmerman is out on bail, whisked away last night to an undisclosed location after clearing $150,000 bond. He will wear an ankle monitor, have a dusk-to-dawn curfew, and be prohibited from carrying firearms. Is that enough, both for the circumstance and the outrage swirling around the alleged killer?

UPDATED 02.19.12 – In 1939, the Nazis burned books. In the 1940s and 1950s, reactionaries in McCarthyist Cold War America burned and banned them. Today the implementation of HB 2281 has given the xenophobes in Arizona a new end-run around the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment: Challenge students’ right to assemble freely and learn.
If the Justice Department, which has broad powers in the civil rights arena doesn’t challenge the law, it will become the blueprint for other racially discriminatory “association” laws and gubernatorial dictates in other states in the South, Southwest, and Midwest. Read the rest of this entry »

We really have to thank Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas for last Thursday’s enlightening lesson in Supreme Court hypocrisy. Just hours after considering whether to take on the review of the Health Care Reform Act, the pair were the guests of honor at an annual dinner of the conservative Federalist Society where one of the sponsors is the law firm arguing against health care reform. Troy Anthony Davis is in the final hours of the process leading to his execution by the State of Georgia. His case has received international attention. Did he murder 27-year-old police officer and former Army Ranger Mark MacPhail in a Burger King parking lot in Savannah, Georgia in 1989? A criminal court that is supposed to convict beyond a reasonable doubt has left plenty of doubt behind.
Davis has spent the last two decades on death row, even though the case against him has fallen apart. His execution date has been set for today at 7:00p.
