Trayvon Martin: Let Justice Be Color Blind

In 2012, African-American, African-Americans, Civil Protests, Communities, Florida, GOP, Ideologies, Law, Race, Racism, Republicans, Special Interests, States, The Law, Trayvon Martin Case, Years on April 23, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Wide eyed and silent, a frightened looking George Zimmerman, arrested and charged for the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, was escorted into a Seminole County Courtroom for his first appearance. Finally, a little bit of proof that the system works for everyone, only a mere 45 days, dozens of protest rallies nationwide, and more than two million petition signatures later.

The system does work for nearly everyone; It just needs a little encouragement for some.

Now Zimmerman is out on bail, whisked away last night to an undisclosed location after clearing $150,000 bond. He will wear an ankle monitor, have a dusk-to-dawn curfew, and be prohibited from carrying firearms.   Is that enough, both for the circumstance and the outrage swirling around the alleged killer?

Rick Santorum and the men of the GOP rail on about Right-to-Life issues.  It’s a Republican conundrum: Appeasing the Religious Right creates a nightmarish welfare state abhorrent to selfish Libertarian and fiscal conservatives that, unchecked, could bring about the devolution of mankind.  Sounds too strong? Read on.

UPDATED 02.19.12 – In 1939, the Nazis burned books.  In the 1940s and 1950s, reactionaries in McCarthyist Cold War America burned and banned them.   Today the implementation of HB 2281 has given the xenophobes in Arizona a new end-run around the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment: Challenge students’ right to assemble freely and learn.

If the Justice Department, which has broad powers in the civil rights arena doesn’t challenge the law, it will become the blueprint for other racially discriminatory “association” laws and gubernatorial dictates in other states in the South, Southwest, and Midwest. Read the rest of this entry »

There will be one loser in Saturday’s South Carolina primary: The GOP.  The winner will be Citizens United, which has unleashed the Godzillas of funding in the Battle of the Billionaires! Who will be the top in the schism of the selfish sects of the Republican Party? A handful of billionaires have spent more than 50 million in just three primary contests to gain control of the general election.  Which billionaire’s scheme will reign supreme?!

Impropriety, Thy Names Art Scalia & Thomas

We really have to thank Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas for last Thursday’s enlightening lesson in Supreme Court hypocrisy.  Just hours after considering whether to take on the review of the Health Care Reform Act, the pair were the guests of honor at an annual dinner of the conservative Federalist Society where one of the sponsors is the law firm arguing against health care reform. Most of the more prominent guests at the conservative organization lean heavily against the Health Care law. Read the rest of this entry »

Troy Anthony Davis: Martyr of a Broken Justice System

In 2011, Capital Punishment, Georgia, Justice, The Public, Years on September 21, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Troy Anthony Davis is in the final hours of the process leading to his execution by the State of Georgia. His case has received international attention. Did he murder 27-year-old police officer and former Army Ranger Mark MacPhail in a Burger King parking lot in Savannah, Georgia in 1989? A criminal court that is supposed to convict beyond a reasonable doubt has left plenty of doubt behind.

Davis has spent the last two decades on death row, even though the case against him has fallen apart. His execution date has been set for today at 7:00p.

“You shouldn’t shop at Wal-Mart. Their employees make low wages and the company doesn’t provide health insurance for them.”

My mother spoke as I continued to look for an available parking space in the sea of cars that is a Wal-Mart parking lot.

She continued:  “And women are paid less for doing the same job as their male counterparts.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Casey Anthony case is over. Hours will be spent by the nauseating Nancy Graces and dishwater dull Dr. Drews of the world rehashing why Ms. Anthony missed her place on death row. How does the media circus affect the outcome of a case?  Did your fascination with the trial contribute to the verdict?  Is there a better way to get justice for victims like two-year-old Caylee Anthony?
