Small SuperPACS: American Principles SuperPAC Funded by Questionably Principled Principals

BOCA RATON, FLA – The SuperPAC disease on the American body politic isn’t just for big national funders like the Kochs. Poorer cousin, tall-hat, no cattle types with an axe to grind, particularly in swing states, are getting into the act too.

The American Principles SuperPAC made news during the final presidential debate after the national media got a gander at dozens of Anti-Obama billboards that the organization sponsored. The group’s funders include some very questionably principled ‘patriots,’ including the owners of a company convicted for mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering; a millionaire lobbying the government for favorable regulations of the auto industry for a particular fuel source; and a Florida pain clinic fighting tighter regulation imposed after  the exposés of the infamous pill mills of South Florida.

It’s the Fear of the ‘Other’, Stupid: Of Romney, Racism, Republicans and Make-Belief

At the final debate President Obama was on point, clearly knowledgeable versus being coached, and had the better one-liners of the evening. He’s also still the black guy to about 43% of the country. Advantage: ROMNEY.

The 47%. Race. Unions. Women’s rights. Food Stamps. Medicaid. Student Loans. LGBT issues.  Know the code. Anyone who thinks that this election is about the economy is delusional or an outright liar. This election is about tribalism and its hold on American power. The white “Us” against the “Other” and the “Lesser.” Read the rest of this entry »

American or Islamic, Radical Fundamentalism is Still Radical Fundamentalism

Fundamentalism is fundamentalism. Jidhadi or Teahadi. The rage and fear that is stoked is real, but it is only a by-product, not a popular groundswell of real thought or desire. These demonstrations of dystopian dysfunctionalism are the handiwork of a handful of powerful Oz-like people who hope these images sell their narrow agenda and keep them in power. OPINION – Last week, several news outlets reported that Chick-fil-A had promised to stop giving to anti-Gay groups after the fast food chain became the center of a turbulent social storm.  While it would seem like good news, as the Brooklyn scholar once said: “It ain’t necessarily so…”

Paul Ryan’s Con of America on God, Government, and the Governed

Our freedom is derived from God and nature, not government.  It’s a big applause line for V.P. hopeful Paul Ryan on the stump, and it got a huge whoop at the GOP Convention last night.  It’s the pea under the walnut shell in the con game of Mr. Ryan’s false Libertarianism.  Here’s why.

Forward? It’s Game Over, Dear Progressives. Here’s What You’ve Missed…

Progressives are on the verge of losing the fight for the future direction of America, socially and politically. While we fret about the individual trees of politics in this cycle, from women’s rights to voter intimidation, Libertarians  have been looking at how best to chop down the whole governmental forest for decades.

The GOP Contraception Confrontation

The recent uproar about women’s rights and health care is a time machine back to the 1950’s.

Birth control has been a non-controversial issue for decades.  At least it was until Newt Gingrich, in early February, latched on to the fact that the Obama administration announced in mid-January that it had mandated that birth control be covered at no co-pay as basic health care service by insurance providers.

It took a while for the GOP to take hold of the issue and blow it out of proportion. Read the rest of this entry »

Of Santorum and Secularism: Religion is the New “Birther” Code for GOP Veiled Racism

I must have missed Mr. Obama’s war on Christmas in 2011. In my part of the country, Christmas decorations had been hung, since before Halloween, I might add, in the department stores with care, in hopes that shoppers and their money would soon be there, to purchase goods to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

The Right claimed that President Obama had waged a war on Christmas. They blamed him for the loss of the traditional “Merry Christmas” and the adoption of “Happy Holidays,” the act of an obviously secular President. [1]

As the President should be in a non-sectarian democracy.

Will Republicans Take This Pledge? Leave Racism Out of Campaign 2012

Before the next ballot is cast, let us challenge Republicans: Take one pledge: Publicly denounce birtherism and racism at all campaign events, meetings. Repudiate its use by any Super PAC that advocates for you. No anti-Muslim talk. No birthers. Period.

I was born to Chinese parents. Raised as a Christian in a Muslim country. And we spoke English as a first language at home.

Which is, to say, I grew up in the most eclectic of environments. Where the singing of Methodist hymns was as familiar a sound to me as the Muslim call to prayer during dawn and dusk. And where I celebrated Chinese New Year and Christmas just surely as I celebrated the festival of Eid alongside Muslim friends.

I didn’t see it as exotic. Or intriguing. Or strange. It was just the nature of life in Malaysia. Read the rest of this entry »
