Rick Santorum and the men of the GOP rail on about Right-to-Life issues. It’s a Republican conundrum: Appeasing the Religious Right creates a nightmarish welfare state abhorrent to selfish Libertarian and fiscal conservatives that, unchecked, could bring about the devolution of mankind. Sounds too strong? Read on.

UPDATED 02.19.12 – In 1939, the Nazis burned books. In the 1940s and 1950s, reactionaries in McCarthyist Cold War America burned and banned them. Today the implementation of HB 2281 has given the xenophobes in Arizona a new end-run around the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment: Challenge students’ right to assemble freely and learn.
If the Justice Department, which has broad powers in the civil rights arena doesn’t challenge the law, it will become the blueprint for other racially discriminatory “association” laws and gubernatorial dictates in other states in the South, Southwest, and Midwest. Read the rest of this entry »

The average Joe has zip, zero, nada understanding of what the hell is going on with the economy. Don’t feel bad, many economists aren’t far behind you.
Online video producer Emergent Order and George Mason University put together a couple of rap music videos that do for economics what School House Rock did for basic math and English concepts in the 1970s.

At a time when we are sending our young men and women to the Middle East to free Afghanis from 9th century fundamentalist ignorance, it is ironic and very wrong when the men and women of the Republican Party who aspire to the highest office in the nation proudly raise their hands and assert their disbelief in science, and, in particular, Evolution.
Surprisingly, almost a full century since the famous Scopes trial, the divide between science and fundamentalist religion in this country is wider than ever. In a 2010 Gallop poll, 40% of Americans surveyed rejected evolution.

Wayne A. Miller, Band Director of the A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, FLA., is a real-life Mr. Holland, a music educator whose department was selected as one of the top ten music programs in the country by the NARAS (National Association of Arts and Science) Foundation and was declared a GRAMMY Gold Division School.
Yet, if the School District of Palm Beach County and its embattled superintendent, Dr. Arthur Johnson, has its way, one of those “best and brightest” teachers that President Obama and pro-education members of Congress like to champion will be out of a job for good. Read the rest of this entry »

Children want to be astronauts, firemen, policemen, and clowns. College students get degrees in philosophy, poetry, and various majors ending in “studies.”
For every Neil Armstrong there are a bunch of Lenny Armstrongs who drive a truck or who wait tables or hammer nails.

Be careful about setting up broad-stroke directives, President Obama. Politicians and bureaucrats of less noble intent may use them poorly, as is the case here in Florida.
The Republican-controlled government, egged on by a the hard-right Florida Chamber of Commerce, has turned your call for “accountability” in education into a jihad against teachers and their union which will benefit no one.
