Seven days ago, a calm and collected President Barack Obama, sat down for an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts. An interview with the President, particularly during an election year, but this one became ground-breaking when Mr. Obama declared that it was personally important for him to affirm that same sex couples should be allowed to marry.[1]

In the immortal words of the one who jump-started this public affirmation, Mr. Vice President Joe Biden, this is a big f**king deal!

Trayvon Martin: Let Justice Be Color Blind

Wide eyed and silent, a frightened looking George Zimmerman, arrested and charged for the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, was escorted into a Seminole County Courtroom for his first appearance. Finally, a little bit of proof that the system works for everyone, only a mere 45 days, dozens of protest rallies nationwide, and more than two million petition signatures later.

The system does work for nearly everyone; It just needs a little encouragement for some.

Now Zimmerman is out on bail, whisked away last night to an undisclosed location after clearing $150,000 bond. He will wear an ankle monitor, have a dusk-to-dawn curfew, and be prohibited from carrying firearms.   Is that enough, both for the circumstance and the outrage swirling around the alleged killer?

Trayvon Martin: Justice Should Be Blind, not Racially Tone Deaf

UPDATED – If a woman is being stalked, the stalker can be penalized just for doing that. A young black man walking in a predominantly white Florida neighborhood is not so lucky. When the law is on the side of the stalker, it perverts the very meaning of the word “justice” in our legal system. Read the rest of this entry »

Freedom of speech is one of the great founding principals of the United States. In fact, the First Amendment specifically prohibits limitations on speech by the Government, with very few exceptions.  Rush Limbaugh is not one of those exceptions and he is forgetting the rule. Of Santorum and Secularism: Religion is the New “Birther” Code for GOP Veiled Racism

In 2012, African-Americans, Barack Obama, Birthers, Campaign 2012, Christianity, Constitution, Democrats, Elections, Faiths, Federal Government, First Amendment, GOP, Ideologies, Islam, LGBT, Neo Conservatives, Politics, Race, Racism, Religious Right, Republicans, Rick Santorum, Special Interests, Tea Party, The Supreme Court, The White House, Years on February 24, 2012 at 10:38 am

I must have missed Mr. Obama’s war on Christmas in 2011. In my part of the country, Christmas decorations had been hung, since before Halloween, I might add, in the department stores with care, in hopes that shoppers and their money would soon be there, to purchase goods to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

The Right claimed that President Obama had waged a war on Christmas. They blamed him for the loss of the traditional “Merry Christmas” and the adoption of “Happy Holidays,” the act of an obviously secular President. [1]

As the President should be in a non-sectarian democracy.

Rick Santorum: Stay in Your Lane

Rick Santorum wants his federal government both ways.

There are two flavors of federal government. One with strong central powers, that has its hand in the day-to-day of life. Then there is  the “states rights,” model, which the GOP promotes, that keeps everything split up into 50 different flavors of government.  States rights has always been code for keeping the status quo in states which don’t want to change their ways, whether it be desegregating a school or flying the Stars and Bars over a capitol building well into the 21st century. The GOP and the Black Strawman

GOP candidates have been running against the “Black Strawman.”

They have created a position, easily refuted by facts and evidence, which plays to basest fears, and the generational racial bias of the Republican party. This fear and bias is nothing new in this country, but the current position pushed by the GOP primary front-runners has a hit a new low. These candidates, Newt Gingrich in particular, have been using stereo types of the Black community to appeal to their base and in some places it appears to be working.

The Oakland Effect on the Occupy Movement

The “Occupy” movement was born out of frustration with lies, gridlock, and a federal political agenda that had nothing to do with healing the economy and putting people back to work.  Oakland has been the focus because the collateral violence there justifies the Right media’s bias, and their attempt to silence the 99% in the mainstream media.  Read the rest of this entry »

No Cure for the Chronic Malady of the American Political Spirit

The Tea Party should more appropriately be called the Me Party.

There is a feeling of callousness and disdain for the poor floating around in the air lately. It is a chronic malady of the American spirit. Like a virus, it eats at our hearts first, then heads to the brain to keep the two from ever connecting. That disconnect permanently allows us, as a society, to turn a negligent eye to those of us who are hurting the most.

Our public sickness,  a cold for centuries that is morphing into a super virus, was best expressed last week by the round of applause given Dr. Ron Paul in the September rounds of Republican debates. Read the rest of this entry »
