The recent uproar about women’s rights and health care is a time machine back to the 1950’s.
Birth control has been a non-controversial issue for decades. At least it was until Newt Gingrich, in early February, latched on to the fact that the Obama administration announced in mid-January that it had mandated that birth control be covered at no co-pay as basic health care service by insurance providers.

The Oscars are known for many odd customs and bits of superstition, but American Blacks best know the Color Purple Curse. Viola Davis was upset by the veteran Meryl Streep at the Oscars, even though Davis had won the Screen Actors Guild award days earlier.

Grover Norquist is smarter than Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum combined. He knows what a fool’s errand running for President is. As a matter of fact, Norquist, our future leader, a key player in the ALEC shadow government, spelled that out exactly in a little-seen and less commented upon speech advocating the Rubber-Stamp Presidency. I must have missed Mr. Obama’s war on Christmas in 2011. In my part of the country, Christmas decorations had been hung, since before Halloween, I might add, in the department stores with care, in hopes that shoppers and their money would soon be there, to purchase goods to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
The Right claimed that President Obama had waged a war on Christmas. They blamed him for the loss of the traditional “Merry Christmas” and the adoption of “Happy Holidays,” the act of an obviously secular President. [1]
As the President should be in a non-sectarian democracy.

Republicans need a new pledge: NO MORE TURNIPHEADS.
The primaries from Hell continue as the mediocre Mitt fends off reactionary Rick and nasty Newt. Another Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) closed last Sunday with more of the same brain-dead 19th century Libertarian-meets-”Christian” rhetoric that is to the party what ticks are to a dog.
Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Sarah Palin are the best that the Republican party can muster up?

UPDATED 02.19.12 – In 1939, the Nazis burned books. In the 1940s and 1950s, reactionaries in McCarthyist Cold War America burned and banned them. Today the implementation of HB 2281 has given the xenophobes in Arizona a new end-run around the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment: Challenge students’ right to assemble freely and learn.
If the Justice Department, which has broad powers in the civil rights arena doesn’t challenge the law, it will become the blueprint for other racially discriminatory “association” laws and gubernatorial dictates in other states in the South, Southwest, and Midwest. Read the rest of this entry »

Rick Santorum wants his federal government both ways.
There are two flavors of federal government. One with strong central powers, that has its hand in the day-to-day of life. Then there is the “states rights,” model, which the GOP promotes, that keeps everything split up into 50 different flavors of government. States rights has always been code for keeping the status quo in states which don’t want to change their ways, whether it be desegregating a school or flying the Stars and Bars over a capitol building well into the 21st century.
