Gingrich Momentum May Be Alive and Well in Florida…Is Newt the New Nader?

To the richest who can advertise longest, the spoils.  That should be Florida’s official electoral motto.  After more than a year of saturation marketing, if Romney doesn’t beat Gingrich by 20% or more, the momentum effect may be offsetting Romney’s millions, even with the early voting lock that the Mittster had going into today’s primary here.

Before the next ballot is cast, let us challenge Republicans: Take one pledge: Publicly denounce birtherism and racism at all campaign events, meetings. Repudiate its use by any Super PAC that advocates for you. No anti-Muslim talk. No birthers. Period.

The GOP and the Black Strawman

GOP candidates have been running against the “Black Strawman.”

They have created a position, easily refuted by facts and evidence, which plays to basest fears, and the generational racial bias of the Republican party. This fear and bias is nothing new in this country, but the current position pushed by the GOP primary front-runners has a hit a new low. These candidates, Newt Gingrich in particular, have been using stereo types of the Black community to appeal to their base and in some places it appears to be working.

Democrats have a few whopping-bad ideas that we inject from time-to-time into the political system. One of them, the “response” to the State of the Union address, initiated under King Richard of Nixon in 1966, really has to go. [1] Read the rest of this entry »

There will be one loser in Saturday’s South Carolina primary: The GOP.  The winner will be Citizens United, which has unleashed the Godzillas of funding in the Battle of the Billionaires! Who will be the top in the schism of the selfish sects of the Republican Party? A handful of billionaires have spent more than 50 million in just three primary contests to gain control of the general election.  Which billionaire’s scheme will reign supreme?!

The public face of the Romney campaign is projecting power and trying to coalesce the GOP faithful around him. Privately, both the candidate and the GOP have to be worried. Neither primary win has been convincing, and their ballyhooed anti-Obama referendum evaporated.

I was born to Chinese parents. Raised as a Christian in a Muslim country. And we spoke English as a first language at home.

Which is, to say, I grew up in the most eclectic of environments. Where the singing of Methodist hymns was as familiar a sound to me as the Muslim call to prayer during dawn and dusk. And where I celebrated Chinese New Year and Christmas just surely as I celebrated the festival of Eid alongside Muslim friends.

I didn’t see it as exotic. Or intriguing. Or strange. It was just the nature of life in Malaysia. Read the rest of this entry »

Santorum Rises Armed with Super PAC Nukes, not Populist Wave

The rapid rise in fortunes for the Rick Santorum campaign was not a sudden surge of populism. The real story of Tuesday’s Iowa Caucuses is that the hand of the uber-rich Libertarian and ultra-Christian Right can tilt elections, and tilt them quickly by way of the new Super PAC slush funds made possible by the Citizens United decision.

He profited from a surge of cash from shadowy SuperPACs which can form and fund candidates, then dissolve well before the Federal Election Commission (FEC) or the media can ascertain who they are, or who is behind them.

These will be the nuclear weapons of the 2012 political season, millions of shadow money being laundered before it is dumped into political campaigns by narrow-interest billionaires.
