Will you be the New American Exceptionalism?

Education is not just a cornerstone of Democracy: It is our foundation, our bedrock. It is crumbling beneath our feet because the 1% who hold power know that education means real democracy,  and with it expansions of economic and social power to a wider population. It threatens their age-old dominance and the massively inequitable distribution of wealth which they enjoy by stacking the deck.

The 21st century challenges us to find a new day and a new direction. Will we be able to make our children the next building blocks of that American dream, or will we succumb to the same fear, greed, and false piety that has consumed the great societal aspirations of mankind for millenia?

To Catch A Schmuck – Good Advice from… Jack Abramoff ?!

Casino Jack is back. He’s having that post-prison epiphany that heals both the soul and his bank account. He’s doing the talk show circuit with his mea culpa dunk booth, BUT… Just as Frank Abagnale Jr. became useful to the FBI after his long check kiting run, it sometimes takes a bad guy to get others.  If they make a movie about the second act of Jack Abramoff’s life, it has to have this title: “To Catch A Schmuck.” Read the rest of this entry »

Economy 101 Rap for Non-Economists is the new Schoolhouse Rock

The average Joe has zip, zero, nada understanding of what the hell is going on with the economy.  Don’t feel bad, many economists aren’t far behind you.

Online video producer Emergent Order and George Mason University put together a couple of rap music videos that do for economics what School House Rock did for basic math and English concepts in the 1970s.

Impropriety, Thy Names Art Scalia and Thomas

Impropriety, Thy Names Art Scalia & Thomas

We really have to thank Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas for last Thursday’s enlightening lesson in Supreme Court hypocrisy.  Just hours after considering whether to take on the review of the Health Care Reform Act, the pair were the guests of honor at an annual dinner of the conservative Federalist Society where one of the sponsors is the law firm arguing against health care reform. Most of the more prominent guests at the conservative organization lean heavily against the Health Care law. Read the rest of this entry »

Ugly America: How the Far Right uses Fear, Hate, and Faux-Franchised Patriotism to Sell the Message of the 1% to 23%

That we have the kind of crass, horrific incivility in our polarized politics, and our Right-intimidated media, is not surprising.  What is sad, shocking, and somber, is the conduct of thousands, perhaps millions of Americans who do the bidding of the 1% even when it contradicts their own self-interest and their personal moral compass.

Herman Cain's Democrat Love Machine

Hermie… I call you that because you take that ridiculous Rovian cue and call us Democrat, rather than Democrats or Democratic… You say that there is a “Democrat machine” out to break you?  Perish the thought!  We really want you to run in the general election.

The Oakland Effect on the Occupy Movement

The Oakland Effect on the Occupy Movement

The “Occupy” movement was born out of frustration with lies, gridlock, and a federal political agenda that had nothing to do with healing the economy and putting people back to work.  Oakland has been the focus because the collateral violence there justifies the Right media’s bias, and their attempt to silence the 99% in the mainstream media.  Read the rest of this entry »

Cain Campaign as Racial Distraction

Herman Cain as Racial Distraction

This week at Truth-2-Power.com, I’ve been writing about both Barack Obama and Herman Cain. No, not the sex scandal, but the bigger financial scandal in the Cain campaign that the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel uncovered.  At the same time, I took about a week to sit back and really take a long, hard look at Barack Obama’s record.  What is interesting is the why of Herman Cain in relationship to President Obama.

Why have the Koch Brothers and the Club for Growth backed a man with hundreds of thousands of dollars who is so blatantly lacking the knowledge of social, government and world affairs that even Fox News people are left with their jaws literally hanging?

Herman Cain: It’s the Other Scandal, Stupid

Herman Cain: It's the Other Scandal, Stupid

A political sex scandal is prime low-hanging fruit for the mainstream media.  What they are missing, though, is $140,000 spent on behalf of the Herman Cain campaign by a Koch Brothers-backed non-profit operated by Cain’s campaign manager in Wisconsin not set up for political activity. The expenditures weren’t reported, possibly breaking campaign finance law. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 Presidential Report Card: Obama Makes the Grade with Headwinds

2011 Presidential Report Card: Obama Makes the Grade

President Obama’s poll numbers don’t look good right now. The economy is still reeling. The Congress is even more obstreperous than it has been, getting virtually none of the People’s business done. The Beltway insider media’s take is an old one: If the economy does not improve, the incumbent president is doomed.

Yet the President is in-step with the majority of the American people both on policy and public sentiment. He is offering up solutions to jobs and the economy that are mainstream and endorsed by all but the most extreme of economists.
