Voice of the Clueless Generation. American: The Bill Hicks Story (Movie Review)

In 2011, Arts, Corporatocracy, Living, Movie Reviews, Movie Reviews, Political Punditry, Politics on May 30, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Dustin Hoffman doesn’t play him in the movie.  I’m not sure who could play comedian Bill Hicks and get all of his complexity.  The eighties’ Lenny Bruce, he lived the requisite life of Hollywood pictures, but he didn’t have the drug-additcted burn of a Bruce, or the spectacular flame-out of an Andy Kaufman. Cancer was his mortal enemy, which is always a seat-squirmer as it can strike anyone at any time, making the audience a tad uneasy.  Hicks was not your Jay Leno yock-it-up kind of comic.  He was a searing satirist, a social philosopher preaching and railing at the masses in an agora with a two-drink minimum.

“American: The Bill Hicks Story” is a documentary, but a very non-traditional one.

It was evil.

It was immoral.

It was the end of days.

It worked.

UPDATED 5/25/11: Ancient tribes blamed angry deities for their troubles. Drought? The goddess of rain is angry. Four dollar gasoline?  There is always that push to blame the Arab oil producers, but, right now, production is peak and supply is good.  So why, in a supply and demand marketplace, are you paying $4.00/gallon for gas?  Don’t pray to St. Clampett, patron saint of oil production, but lay the blame at the feet of the same people who are socially re-engineering the United States in their image: The Koch Brothers.

OPINION – Democrats stink at branding and messaging. They still live in the wonkish intellectual nirvana that somehow if we explain the societal benefits of policy to the American people, it will quell their fears and they will rise enlightened into a new age.  Republicans embrace fear. They package and brand it in flavors and variations, like Oreos or spaghetti sauce. Fear sells their Sham-WOW politics. Back us and we can make America shiny and white again. Just follow us, folks. We’ll keep the bogeymen at bay. We’re the patriots. The morally correct. The true Americans. It is not dissimilar from the kind of advertising that the cigarette industry used to sell cancer to kids for generations. Read the rest of this entry »

Priest Pedophilia? Blame it on Woodstock

In Christianity, Faiths, Roman Catholicism on May 19, 2011 at 2:58 am

Lost in the Arnold Schwarzenegger scandal and the Newt Gingrich political incorrectness implosion earlier this week was the bombshell release of a $1.8M study by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Their conclusion as to why there was a wave of priest pedophilia in the Roman Catholic Church?  Blame it on Woodstock.

Tea Party Quicksand in the GOP Presidential Landscape

When Newt Gingrich is too moderate for the Republican Party, the Tea Party has turned the political landscape to quicksand for GOP presidential aspirants.

Gingrich, appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, was asked whether Republicans should buck polls that show their Medicare voucher system is D.O.A.  His reply put the GOP spin-o-sphere into complete apoplexy:

Running for the Sidelines, Not the White House

Most of the “GOP hopefuls” know that they do not have a hope in hell of winning. So why do it?  The label “Republican Candidate” is a rhetorical gold mine where the chosen few can spend years making millions in hollow speeches, book deals, radio talk shows, and at the Conservative’s Cabal and choice cash cow, Fox News.

Maybe It Should Just Be the New Orleans Heritage Festival without the Jazz

In Arts, Jazz, Music on May 8, 2011 at 4:24 am

Yes, I speak jazz heresy: Maybe it is time that the promoters of the annual April/May music festival in New Orleans fess up: Jazz may get top billing on the signage and the posters at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, but it rides the back of the bus on the fairgrounds.

There’s a reason for this too… (Shhhh…) Jazz doesn’t make the festival much money.

Bin Laden Made Big Oil Rich; GOP Means to Keep Them That Way

It is always on the days that the news flow is so obsessed with one big story that both parties in the House of Representatives are out to try and set up the next news cycle.  This week two purely political bills, one on Big Oil’s windfall profits tax break, and one on abortion, both were lobbed by politicians into motion.  The GOP means to keep Big Oil’s tax breaks, and make sure that they have some foot soldiers in their dwindling grass roots base by keeping anti-abortion groups happy.
